About our project
Development of a Resilient Smart Network System against Natural Disasters
We aim to advance “Information collection and analysis to support disaster response” and “to enhance the disaster response capabilities of individuals, local governments, and businesses” by highly integrating realworld and cyber-space systems and leveraging advanced ICT, AI, and other cutting-edge technologies.
Future Vision in Society 5.0
In response to major earthquakes, as well as frequent and severe windstorms and floods, we will
strengthen the disaster response capabilities of businesses and municipalities, implement preventive
measures to protect the lives of individuals, and ensure a prompt and accurate response by relevant
organizations, with the goal of reducing societal damage and achieving rapid recovery.
What is Society 5.0?
Mission
With wind and flood damage becoming more frequent and severe due to climate change, and the imminent threat of a national disaster-level earthquake, such as the Nankai Trough earthquake or one directly beneath the Tokyo metropolitan area, we aim to strengthen and enhance the disaster response capabilities of the national government, local governments, businesses, and individuals.

Program Director Koichi Kusunoki earned a Ph.D. in Engineering from the University of Tokyo in 1997. He then served as an assistant professor at the Institute of Industrial Science, University of Tokyo, and as a researcher at the Building Research Institute. In 2000, he became a senior researcher at the Building Research Institute. After spending a year at the University of California, San Diego, he moved to Yokohama National University in 2006, where he became an associate professor in the Faculty of Engineering.
In 2014, he joined the Division of Disaster Mitigation Science at the Earthquake Research Institute, University of Tokyo, and was appointed professor in 2018, a role he has held since. His research focuses on structural health monitoring, performance testing of reinforced concrete structures, and damage assessment in earthquake-affected areas.
